Weingut Atzberg
Wachau
the
history
The “ÄRZTBERG” was first named as a wine-producing single-vineyard site in a deed dating back to 1382. The soil – as the original name in German suggests – is rich in ore.
Due to the difficulties associated with the cultivation of this steep vineyard, viniculture on the Atzberg was abandoned in the 1950s after a good 700 years. The renowned Wachau expert wine pastor Hans Denk (†) always attributed a quality to the site that is unique in the Wachau, which is why, starting in 2008, this outstanding site was recultivated with a great deal of work by hand and countless steps.
the
Atzberg vineyard
The Atzberg lies in the heart of the Wachau, one of the world’s most beautiful cultural landscapes. The Singerriedel opposite and the Atzberg vineyard are likely to have formed one geological unit before the Mieslingbach stream separated the two.
Iron-containing red stone with gneiss and slate structure combined with a very barren layer of earth – the extreme mineral content of the soil has been scientifically documented by numerous mineral finds.
The Atzberg is an extremely steep site. Its southerly orientation, the optimal sun exposure, the cool air descending through the Mieslingtal valley at night and the direct proximity to the Danube all produce a very special microclimate.

wines
Grüner Veltliner
Obere Steilterrassen
A Grüner Veltliner icon almost unrivalled in its energy and richness.
The golden-yellow berries of the Obere Steilterrassen are carefully hand-selected in late autumn when there are only a few grapes left on the vines in the Wachau. You won’t find a more concentrated Grüner Veltliner.
Light yellow-green, silver reflections. Nuances of ripe apricots on a bed of yellow pome fruit with a gentle whisper of orange zests. Juicy, extract-sweet texture, a hint of pear and honeydew melon, fine acidity structure, elegant and adherent, ready to drink now.

Grüner Veltliner
Steilterrassen
The “little brother” of the Obere Steilterrassen is bursting with power and expressiveness.
Harvested somewhat earlier, it has a slightly lower alcohol content and its vibrant acidity renders it both elegant and unbelievably harmonious despite its concentration.
Medium yellow-green, silver reflections. Fine meadow herbs, hints of yellow stone fruit, tobacco spice, notes of fresh pear, inviting bouquet. Complex, full-bodied, ripe yellow apple, fine acidity structure, dark mineral tones, delicate blossom honey on the finish, good development potential.Falstaff Guide 2021
the
individual
Paul Kiefer took over the management of the Atzberg winery in 2021. The graduate of the Weinbauschule Mistelbach (Mistelbach School of Viniculture) and certified Weinakademiker (wine academic) has been working in the wine industry for more than 20 years now and also holds the post of Sales Manager at the famous Mayer am Pfarrplatz winery in Vienna. He fell in love with Wachau wine almost immediately upon joining Weingut Knoll in 2009, and this passion has remained with him to the present day.
